The entrance to Warrick Road in Goliad where the body of Christoval Lee Garza, 38, was found early Friday morning. Garza was found lying on the ground somewhere on the road with a head injury according to Goliad County Sheriff Kirby Brumby.

Authorities are investigating the death of a 38-year-old Goliad man whose body was discovered Friday morning.

Christoval Lee Garza was found deceased in a residential area on Warrick Road, behind the grain elevators east of the Dollar General store. Residents along the unmarked dirt road declined to comment Friday about Garza or the circumstances surrounding his death.

Gena Fennell Hinsley, 40, of Dallas, went to Goliad High School with Garza and would visit him whenever she returned to Goliad to see family.

"He was everybody's friend," Hinsley said. "He would always make you laugh."

The Goliad County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an unresponsive person lying outside about 5 a.m.

The officers found Garza with an injury to his head, and Goliad County Sheriff Kirby Brumby said alcohol could be a factor in the death.

"At this moment, we are not saying that it is a homicide," Brumby said. "It appears he slipped and fell and hit the concrete. It's still under investigation."

An autopsy will help the sheriff's office determine whether the death was caused by a fall or an attack, he said.

Garza was previously employed at a grocery store in Goliad and often took the time to check in on his older neighbors, Hinsley said.

"He was just a really, really good guy," she said.
