Fire heavily damaged a single-level home late Thursday in the 1700 block of North Cameron Street.

The fire, which was reported about 10:50 p.m., burned the back of the house and spread to the roof.

Royal Thomas, 92, rented the home and was alone inside asleep when he woke up and saw the flames over his head.

"I could hardly come out of my room," Thomas said while sitting outside. "I hadn't seen a fire like that before." Thomas said he managed somehow to get out of the home.

Emergency personnel also helped a disabled woman in a wheelchair evacuate her home, which was next door to the burning structure.

As of late Thursday, no injuries were reported.

Police blocked off the 1700 block of Cameron at East Trinity Street and East Brazos Street as firefighters worked to get the blaze under control. About 11:40 p.m., firefighters were still trying to put out the blaze.
