VC commercial truck driving course begins Aug. 11

Victoria College to purchase a tanker that will be used to expand training for students enrolled in the Truck Driving Program.

Victoria College's truck driving course is accepting applications for classes beginning Aug. 11.

Students are required to have a valid Texas driver's license, complete a Texas Department of Public Safety physical and drug and alcohol screening.

During the seven-week course, students will experience classroom and behind-the-wheel driving activities. The coursework includes public, street and highway driving, an emphasis on safety, rules, regulations and techniques and opportunities to meet with recruiters from the trucking industry.

Upon completion, students will be eligible to take the commercial drivers license exams at the Department of Public Safety. Graduates of the course will be eligible for any entry-level employment in the trucking industry.

In the Golden Crescent, truck drivers earn an average of $15.90 per hour, or $33,820 per year. Commercial truck drivers transport supplies, equipment and finished goods from one point to another so they can be distributed, bought or sold.
