The suspect of an attempted vehicle robbery looks at the man whose vehicle he was trying to steal from as he is escorted to a police car by Victoria Police Officer Robert Nichols outside of the Brown Bag Saloon on Navarro Street on Sunday. The suspect was apprehended after the owner of the vehicle and others inside the bar caught and detained him outside until the police arrived.

A 38-year-old Victoria man was arrested Sunday after patrons at the Brown Bag Saloon caught him stealing items from a vehicle.

Doug Baruch and his friend had just finished a round of golf and stopped off at the bar for a drink. Shortly after, witnesses told them that a man was riffling around their truck.

Baruch and his friend asked the man what he was doing, Baruch said. "And he said, 'I'm robbing your car.'"

Baruch and his friend attempted to detain the man, but he was able to break free. With the help of passer-by Shane Cruz, the three kept the man in custody until police responded.

John Sadler, of Victoria, was arrested and taken to the Victoria County Jail on suspicion of burglary, Victoria Police Lt. Ralph Buentello said. Sadler attempted to take a roll of quarters, sunglasses and cigarettes from inside the vehicle, he said.

This year, more than 100 burglaries from motor vehicle reports have been filed with the police department, according to department crime mapping software.

While the vehicle belonged to Baruch's friend, he said he knows what it's like to have someone steal from you.

"Naturally, it sucks to have someone invade your property," he said. "I work hard for everything I own - but don't worry; I'm not going to let this ruin my day."

According to court records, Sadler has previous criminal charges, which include terrorist threat of a family or household member, criminal mischief between $500 and $1,500, criminal mischief between $1,500 and $20,000 and driving while intoxicated.
