REFUGIO COUNTY - Four people were killed and five injured Monday afternoon after a head-on wreck on state Highway 35 about 8 miles south of Tivoli.
A Nissan pickup was headed south on state Highway 35 about 5:23 p.m., when for an unknown reason, the driver went into the northbound lane, colliding with a silver Honda Civic, said Charlie Ramirez, a senior corporal with the Department of Public Safety in Corpus Christi.
The wreck happened near Farm-to-Market Road 238, and both vehicles came to rest on the east side of the highway in the bar ditch, he said.
Two adults and two children in the Honda were killed. Rosalinda Albarado, 26, of Kyle, Becelia Gutierrez, 27, of Austin, Karly Rose Chavez, 7, of Kyle, and Riyan Vallejo, 4, of Austin, were taken to Moore Funeral Home in Refugio.
The five injured in the Nissan are thought to be from Austin. They were taken to Corpus Christi Spohn Memorial Hospital, he said. One of the five was flown by helicopter.
Department of Public Safety troopers were scaling the crash site Monday night to determine whether the drivers applied their brakes before the crash.
Austwell Volunteer Fire Department and the Refugio County Sheriff's Office assisted.
The Texas Department of Transportation was blocking the road about 8:30 p.m.
Ramirez did not know when the road would be reopened.
