Oceans For Emotions: Remembering to remember

"Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I

will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28

Recently, I have been getting ready for my granddaughters and great-grandson to come visit me.

There is Dyanne, who teaches in South Korea; Marilyn Elaine Wheat, a banker from Arkansas; and my 5-year-old great-grandson, Joseph.

When I read this scripture, I realized that's exactly how I feel - tired from getting ready for my "grand girls" and my great-grandson to visit.

When my grand girls came to visit, I was so proud of them. They realized I was tired from getting ready for them, and they just took over and did all of the work.

To celebrate my birthday, my grand girls decorated with "Happy Birthday" signs and bright, ocean blue ribbons. They grilled scrumptious shrimp with colorful vegetables, savory squash casserole and tasty stuffed peppers.

For my birthday cake, we had assorted cheesecake, and it was all so delicious. For cake toppings, we had fresh, savory strawberries topped with homemade whipped cream.

For our entertainment, we went swimming in my pool, and later, we sat around and shared our favorite memories. We then watched our most memorable videos from the beach and the river, which were taken about 20 years ago.

Oh my gosh, what a precious time we had remembering to remember "the way we were."

We talked of collecting shells, making sand castles, crabbing, catching their first fish, playing in the ocean and swimming in the Frio River, catching minnows with bread balls between our toes, crabbing and floating in the ocean and down the ice cold Frio River.

They always borrowed my tie-dyed shirts because they would always forget to bring theirs. There must be something about tie-dyed shirts that causes memory problems. They always forgot to give mine back. It sure made it easy for me to identify them among the other swimmers.

They asked, "Granny, why is it that all of our favorite memories with you are always at a body of water like the ocean or the river?"

My answer was, "Our Lord provides for all of your needs. He gave you another grandmother who loves to take you shopping at the mall, and then, He gave you me."

Dear Lord, thank you for all of the beautiful blessings You have given me. I am especially grateful for my "grands," Dyanne, Marilyn Elaine and Joseph, and the precious memories we continue to make.
