Victoria Southwest has another chance at state berth

After defeating Lamar National 2-1 for the second time Monday, Victoria Southwest has one more opportunity to win the Section IV All-Star tournament and also a state championship berth.
Victoria Southwest scored twice in the first inning on a two-RBI double hit by Marco Di Leo, said coach Abe Zarate.
Lamar National responded with a run of their own in the first inning but never caught up to the Victoria 12-year-old All-Stars.
Victoria Southwest's Jordan Fillmore pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up one hit to Lamar National. Ricky Gonzalez pitched the final out of the game, Zarate said.
"Jacob Bordovsky, Ashton Grones and Ricky Gonzalez made great plays on defense," Zarate said. "And Jordan pitched a great game."
In the remaining five innings, the Victoria team focused on holding Lamar National at bay.
"At bats, we battled, and sometimes, you have to win games 2-1 when you're facing good pitching," Zarate said. "The boys stayed in the game and gutted it out. You couldn't ask for a better opportunity; now it's one game, and we'll see who wins Section IV and represents Section IV at the state championship."
Lamar National, a team from Richmond, has a long tradition of winning the sectionals. Victoria Southwest wants to change that.
"This is the first time Victoria has beaten Lamar in who knows how long," Zarate said. "No one is expecting them to win except their parents, families and fans. I told them to go out there and play loose and their best. God willing, it worked for us tonight, and if it's meant to be, we'll be representing (Section IV) at the state championship."
The final game of the double-elimination tournament will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
