VISD to hear results of traffic study at high schools

An update on the traffic flow at Victoria's two public high schools is expected to be discussed Thursday by the Victoria school board.
The city of Victoria and the Texas Department of Transportation conducted the study.
"I think everyone's really looking forward to hearing that," said Tami Keeling, school broad president. "We want to make sure everyone has safe and efficient access to our schools."
Traffic problems, which have existed since the schools were built four years ago, continue to be discussed by the district, city and state.
The board is also expected to hear a Parent/Community Engagement Report from the community members. The report was approved through House Bill 5 during the last legislative session, Keeling said.
"I'm really pleased with the job we've done there," Keeling said. "We're going to hear from committees covering 12 different areas in the district."
In other business, the board will decide if it will approve a one-year suspension of the state's Student Success Initiative, which would allow fifth- and eighth-grade students to advance to the next grade level only by passing the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness mathematics test.
VISD wants to suspend the requirements for mathematics because of changes in state requirements for those grade levels.
"Our teachers have been preparing for the transition of the curriculum standards, and we are confident our students will be getting the instruction they need to be successful during that transition time," Diane Boyett, VISD communications director, wrote in a statement. "We will still strongly encourage students to do their best on the STAAR math at all grade levels but welcome the one-year suspension of the Student Success Initiative requirements."
It should be emphasized that this one-year suspension of Student Success Initiative is for mathematics only, Boyett wrote.
