The General Zaragoza Society of Goliad is seeking nomination for its third annual Zaragoza Education and Community Awards.

The society is celebrating its 70th anniversary as a public service organization and an advocate of education and community service.

For many years, the organization has promoted the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration in honor of Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza, who was born in what is now Goliad County's La Bahia Del Espiritu Santo.

The organization donates more than $10,000 in scholarships yearly to students.

The organization is also a large contributor to community projects and youth activities.

The society is seeking nominations from the region of people who are outstanding contributors in their community. The categories are law enforcement, education, humanitarianism and citizenship/community service.

Nominations can come from neighboring communities and civic organizations such as chambers of commerce, Lions clubs, Rotary clubs, school districts, cities, counties and other clubs and people.

Nominating groups or people are asked to present a two- to three-page, single-spaced outline with the nominee's resume and reason for the nomination. A nominee is eligible for one category only.

All judging decisions are final, with finalists receiving the General Zaragoza Medallion at the awards banquet Nov. 1.

All nominations must be received by email, postal service or hand-delivered by Oct. 17 to Hernan Jaso, event promoter.

Forward nominations or questions to Jaso, P.O. Box 164, Goliad, Texas 77963, call 361-655-6961 or email hernanjaso@sbcglobal.net.
