Team heads to final game in tourney

July 21, 2014 at 2:21 a.m.

Bryce Sitka looks for a chance to steal second base Sunday when Victoria Southwest played Bridge City in the Texas East state championship. Victoria won 18-15.

All season, Victoria Southwest manager Abe Zarate has said the team never quits.

The All-Star 11- and 12-year-olds "gut it out" until the end.

That was true again Monday as they went into extra innings against Rose City East in the Texas East state championship.

Victoria Southwest defeated Rose City 11-10 in the seventh inning, which puts Victoria in the state championship game against Pearland East.

Ky Zarate hit two home runs while teammates Dawson Holly and Bryce Sitka hit one home run each.

"These boys just fought and clawed," Zarate said. "We expected it because they have so much heart."

Victoria Southwest trailed by one run at the bottom of the fourth inning but quickly evened up the score 10-10 after six innings.

A seventh inning run put the nicknamed "honey badgers" in the winner's circle.

Victoria Southwest has to defeat Pearland twice to win the tournament. They play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Faulkner Park in Tyler.

Zarate gives the glory of their victory to God, he said.

"Without Him, none of this would be possible," he said.
