Victoria groups host fan drives

Several Victoria groups are hosting fan drives throughout July.
KAVU Channel 25 will begin collecting fans and monetary donations to purchase fans Monday until the end of August alongside the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center.
Checks may be made out to the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center.
Fans can be dropped off at KAVU Channel 25, 3808 N. Navarro St., or at the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center, 603 E. Murray St.
The drive is for the elderly and low-income families.
Some residents cannot afford to cool their homes, even when the heat index soars to 105 degrees in the summer.
"They're also not opening their windows because they think someone is going to break in," said Debbie Garner, the executive director for the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center.
Last year, 557 fans were collected and distributed.
To get on a list to receive a fan, call the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center at 361-576-2189 and provide your name and a working telephone number.
Community Action committee, meanwhile, will begin collecting fans and money to buy fans for the underprivileged immediately, said Executive Director Vicki Smith.
It plans to deliver fans to clients who already get a home-meal delivery.
Others may drop fans off or pick them up at the committee's office at 4007 Halsey St.
Checks to purchase fans may be made to Community Action Committee.
"We are a not-for-profit, so we don't have to pay sales tax. We can actually sometimes buy them for a lesser price," Smith said.
