Editor, the Advocate:
Maybe some people don't know that the new Goliad Mayor Anna Machacek is trying to obtain the financial records from Goliad City Hall. She and council members are committed to understanding how the taxpayer's dollars are being spent.
It may be more clear when citizens see the following data from the 2013 fiscal year: administrative costs, $410,000 ($60,000 over budget); streets, $443,000 ($49,000 under budget); fire department, $76,000 ($15,000 under budget); parks and recreation, $65,000 ($49,000 under budget); public health, $168,000 ($66,000 over budget); and municipal court, $75,000 ($31,000 over budget).
Streets, fire department and parks were underfunded while administrative costs soared!
I've heard people leveling criticism on Mayor Machacek, but criticizing her because she wants to get Goliad's finances straightened out is just wrong! Anyone remember that the former city attorney and mayor pro tem held a closed session at council meeting to chastise Councilwoman Liz Holsey for attempting to air city financials in open council? They told her that the people of Goliad would not understand them. Well, I understand them, and I believe you do, too.
Please give the new mayor a chance. She knows what she's doing.
Everett Jacob, Goliad
