The Yoakum Tom-Tom Festival will offer free concerts and live music Friday and Saturday.

In its 86th year, the festival celebrates the area's once abundant tomato crops and harvests. It is hosted by the Yoakum Chamber of Commerce.

"The community has given so much to support the fun time and the fellowship," said Bill Lopez, president of the Yoakum Chamber of Commerce. "So we said, 'Let's make everything free this year.'"

This year, new activities will include a tug-of-war competition for all ages, three moto-cross jump performances throughout the afternoon and monster truck rides for children.

Softball, washer and horseshoe tournaments will also provide entertainment along with a truck, car and motorcycle show.

On Friday, Los Kolaches will provide entertainment from 7:30 p.m. to midnight at the pavilion in the city park. The carnival will open at 6 p.m. A kiddie parade will also take place in the park.

The rodeo begins at 8 p.m. at the rodeo arena.

On Saturday, a parade will kick off the festivities at 10 a.m. in downtown. The carnival will also open at 10 a.m. in the park. Vendors will begin selling their crafts, food and beverages at 11 a.m.

Jarrod Birmingham will headline a full day of musical entertainment. Josh Grider, Mario Flores and the Soda Creek Band and Grupo Fama will also perform, among others.

The barbecue award ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the pavilion in the park. The rodeo will follow at 8 p.m. at the rodeo arena.

Parking will be free Friday but will cost $3 per car Saturday. Coolers, four-wheelers and golf carts will not be allowed in the park.

"I think we have something for everyone this year," Lopez said. "I hope we have a great turnout."
