Van hits, critically injures Victoria bicyclist (w/video)

Victoria Fire Department Battalion Chief Roger Hempel leans against the broken windshield of a maroon minivan that struck a man on a bicycle Saturday evening in the 2000 block of North Ben Wilson Street near  East Rio Grande Street.

A man riding a bike was struck Saturday night by a minivan near the intersection of East Rio Grande and North Ben Wilson streets.

One emergency responder at the scene described the man's injuries as critical. He was taken to Citizens Medical Center.

A Victoria police officer said the bicyclist was struck as he was leaving the convenience store at the intersection. The crash occurred about 8:35 p.m. The van's windshield was smashed.

Police blocked off part of the intersection to investigate the scene.

Officials also took the female driver of the minivan to a hospital as a precaution.

Names, ages and the medical condition of the victim and driver were not available late Saturday.
