VC receives funds for self-sufficiency electrical, welding training

June 14, 2014 at 1:14 a.m.

Victoria College has been awarded funds to help train identified persons in need to support oil and gas industry infrastructure development.

The Self Sufficiency Fund from the Texas Workforce Commission will prepare and train Temporary Assistance for Needy Families-eligible clients, including noncustodial parents, which are referred to Victoria College from Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent.

The training provided by Victoria College will focus on electrical and welding occupations that are in demand in the oil and gas industry, with an emphasis on industrial construction needs, as identified by Workforce Solutions.

"We look forward to partnering with Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent on this project that will increase the skill level and wages in our region," said Sherri Pall, director of VC's Workforce and Continuing Education Department.

"The goal of this fund is to help TANF recipients, as well as those individuals at risk of becoming dependent on public assistance, to receive training that will lead to a job and become independent of financial assistance," explained Henry Guajardo, Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent executive director.

In the Golden Crescent region, electricians are in demand and earn an average of $41,000 a year. Welders earn an average of $34,554 a year.
