Music students receive scholarships

Shahed Nielsen, Betsy Gifford and Heidi Shay, piano students of Ann Johannsen, were each awarded a $100 senior scholarship and certificate from the Victoria Music Teachers Association. The awards were presented at the 34th Honors Recital on May 4 at the Johnson Symposium Center.

Shahed is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Buddy Nielsen, of Victoria. He was a senior at Victoria East High School and valedictorian of his 2014 graduating class. Shahed plans to attend the University of Houston Honors College in the fall with a major in petroleum engineering.

Betsy is the daughter of Holly and Jenny Gifford, of Victoria. She is home-schooled and on the All-Region National Basketball Team. Betsy will attend Victoria College in the fall with a major in musical therapy.

Heidi is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Shay, of Victoria. She was a senior at Victoria East High School. She received a gold medal at the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event. Heidi plans to attend the University of Texas in the fall with a major in biochemistry.

This scholarship is available to any high school senior who has taken lessons from a member teacher of the Victoria Music Teachers Association all four years of high school and has participated in a minimum of 10 VMTA, Texas Music Teachers Association or Music Teachers National Association events during these four years.
