Jackson County EOC ready to provide help
In the event of a disaster that cannot be handled at a local level, The Jackson County Emergency Operations Center has procedures in place to provide temporary shelter to its residents.
However, Allan Friedrich, Jackson County emergency management coordinator, said the county needs to know who it might be serving now rather than later.
Those who would need assistance can register through the state information line by dialing 211.
The center, which was remodeled in 2009, allows city and county officials to stay abreast of hurricane news and other disasters while communicating with state and federal agencies, Friedrich said.
"The county EOC only gets involved when the incident escalates beyond our local assets capabilities," Friedrich said. "In the event of a local response requiring temporary relocation of (residents) such as a fire, flood or hazmat, county facilities are available."
In the event of a complete evacuation, Friedrich said the state has shelters set up in Austin and San Antonio for those who self-evacuate. The county participates with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry to assist those needing help with evacuation. The evacuation departure point is in the County Service building in Edna, 411 N. Wells St.
