Victoria school board approved about $145,000 in savings in curriculum and workers' compensation Thursday.

With the addition of workers' compensation services from the Safety National Casualty Corporation, the district expects to save about $128,000, said Tracy Beck, VISD employee benefits coordinator.

"We'll be able to redirect those funds to classroom instruction, which will be really nice," said Tami Keeling, VISD board president.

The Safety National Casualty Corp. offers stop loss insurance, which limits claim coverage to a specific amount to ensure that catastrophic or numbers claims don't upset the financial reserves of a self-funded plan.

"We'll have the exact same coverage as we've had before," said Robert Jaklich, VISD superintendent.

Third-party administrative services will be provided by Tristar Risk Management, of Corpus Christi.

Other savings will be seen with the change in amount of contracted services from the Region III Education Service Center.

Susanne Carroll, VISD executive director of curriculum, instruction and accountability, said the district will save $17,000 in curriculum services.

"Since we added additional curriculum personnel, we are able to provide our own services," Carroll said.

However, the district will be expanding its bandwidth services from the Region III Education Service Center, Carroll said.

"Technology in the classroom has increased," Carroll said. "We need to expand our bandwidth so our campuses can increase their support."

The board was still meeting in closed session at 10 p.m. to discuss hiring two new elementary school principals and a head band director for West High School.
