Hibiscus Fest flourishes after 5-year hiatus

Carol Heinrich, of Victoria, looks up at the hanging baskets as she shops at Saturday's Hibiscus Fest at Devereux Gardens. "I come here all the time," Heinrich said of Devereux Gardens. "I love it." The fest featured almost 2,500 plants of more than 50 varieties.

Saturday's Hibiscus Fest at Devereux Gardens featured almost 2,500 plants of more than 50 varieties.

This year's Hibiscus Festival was the first one after a five-year hiatus from the event, according to Allison Richter, a grower at Devereux Gardens.

"It's been five years but people still remember it," she said. "A lot of them have said that they're glad that its back and wanting us to do it next year."

Richter said that "Despite the heat it's been a really good turnout. We've had a lot of people coming out to support Devereux."

Snow cones were for sale so shoppers could cool off while they look for plants in Saturday's heat.
