Goliad council needs to be more transparent
Editor, the Advocate:
At the Goliad City Council meeting June 17, the council approved a letter of engagement for legal services to be provided by Knight and Partners of Austin to the tune of $175, at a minimum, per hour. After the meeting, the local press and I asked Mayor Anna Machacek about who recommended this firm to her. She said a friend but would not divulge the name.
Councilwoman Liz Holsey did not want to say.
Councilman Joey Thompson said Mayor Machacek recommended the firm.
Councilwoman Cheryl Worley and Councilman Buddy Zavesky said they didn't know.
In view of the transparency under which this council said they wanted to run the City Council, it seems strange and unnecessary to keep this important piece of information from the taxpayers of the city of Goliad.
Perhaps at the next meeting, we will be enlightened. It would also be helpful to know what other firms were contacted and why this particular firm was chosen. And, most importantly, why, since no deficiencies in the performance of the current city attorney's duties have been brought to his or anyone's attention, is it necessary to hire an outside attorney?
