Cain receives award at Texas GOP convention

June 24, 2014 at 1:24 a.m.

Russell Cain, center, received the outstanding volunteer award for Senate District 18 at the Texas GOP Convention in Fort Worth this month.

Russell Cain, of Port Lavaca, was named outstanding volunteer for Texas State Senate District 18 at the Texas GOP Convention in Fort Worth earlier this month.

"I'm surprised I got the award because there are a lot of good volunteers out there," Cain said. "We have fundraisers for the candidates, and we help with their campaigns."

Award nominations were based on volunteerism and advancing Republican goals.

Less government, lower taxes and fiscal responsibility are the principles on which the Republican Party stands, Cain said. The party is also against abortion and for secure borders.

"We are always looking for good Republicans to run for office in the Coastal Bend area," he said.

More than 9,000 people attended the state convention. There are 31 senate districts in Texas. District 18, which is represented by Glenn Hegar, of Katy, has 17 counties, including Victoria, DeWitt and Goliad.
