Running for political office is one of the great privileges we have as citizens of the greatest nation in the history of mankind. I believe the United States of America and the freedoms guaranteed under our Constitution come from God above. Next to the Bible, and the word of God, our Constitution is the greatest document ever produced by mankind. I take running for office and being a public servant or community leader very seriously.

That's why, when approached by Democrats to run as Victoria County treasurer, I thought it was a great idea to run as the Republican that I am. It was assumed, since I am a Hispanic, that I was a Democrat. Their longtime Democratic county treasurer, my opponent, switched parties knowing he would get beat as a longtime Democrat in the next election. I have been a Republican since Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, all the way to today. I am Republican because I believe in the conservative principles of hard work, accountability, honesty, integrity and that people should not expect free handouts. I believe in family, children and conservative principles that make Texas and Victoria a great place to live, work and raise a family. I am proud to say I am a Republican, and I want more people to join the Republican Party.

There are many leaders in our community who should run for office. Most don't because politics can be a game in which you are unfairly attacked and falsehoods are made about your integrity and life. People say it's just politics. Elections should be about more than politics. It should be about public policy and how we make things better for all citizens. I have run a clean race based on my record. My opponent has been attacking me, saying I will gamble with taxpayers' money in the stock market. That is simply not true; it's just negative politics from a negative campaign. County funds are invested today and will be tomorrow no matter who wins the election. As a vice president of a local bank in private banking and wealth management with 29 years of experience, I believe we can make smarter, safe, conservative choices, following state law to get more return on investments. There are complaints I have heard about how my opponent runs the office of county treasurer. I made a decision to run on my positive record, not a negative campaign. That's what I've done. I have given Republican primary voters a choice between my 29 years of banking experience and my opponent.

Many of you this past week may have seen a story in the Victoria Advocate regarding a correction on campaign forms regarding donors. We have honestly reported all contributions; however, because of an oversight, we listed three donors, out of many donors, as anonymous. They were listed that way by their request and done so on the report by my campaign treasurer. When brought to my attention, we quickly corrected the forms and listed their names. I am not a professional politician, just someone running for office for the first time hoping to use my 29 years of banking experience to help the people of Victoria County. I've been told by election officials corrected campaign reports are common. While my treasurer may have filled out the forms, I take responsibility for the oversight.

Working full time, being a wife and mom and campaigning is extremely difficult. The primary election will be over in a few days. My experience as vice president in private banking and wealth management and my work in our community make me qualified to be your next Victoria County treasurer. I have helped many people with financial issues through the years, and they are strong supporters of my campaign. I'm asking for your vote.

I want to thank my family, friends and voters who have supported me during this Republican primary election for Victoria County treasurer. Election Day is Tuesday. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and I encourage everyone to vote, regardless of party or who you plan to vote for. It's important for more citizens to take part in the election process.
