Violation of campaign finance law is red flag

Editor, the Advocate:

There are many good reasons why Texas has campaign finance laws, and we saw a timely example on the front page of the Victoria Advocate on Thursday.

When we see politicians have such disregard for laws and the right of the public to know who's behind their campaign, we're reminded again that transparency in government and politics is so important.

How can we have honest and fair elections when candidates think they can hide financial information from the public? In Texas, laws like these that promote transparency are called Sunshine Laws.

The article Thursday about Lisa Hernandez and her campaign finance violations reminded me of a famous quote from Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis: "Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants."

As a Victoria County landowner and taxpayer, I am asking you to vote to keep local politics clean and re-elect Sean Kennedy as county treasurer.
