Another Sonic Drive-In robbed
A Victoria Sonic Drive-In was once again the target of a lone gunman.
A man wearing a black ball cap and a black bandana over his face robbed the restaurant in the 3000 block of Houston Highway just before midnight Wednesday, walking away with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a Victoria Police Department news release.
No injuries were reported.
Employees were forced into a walk-in freezer while another employee opened the safe, according to the news release. A similar incident was reported Jan. 31 at the Sonic Drive-In at 3603 N. John Stockbauer Drive.
Detectives investigating the case said they were not prepared to suggest the two incidents were related.
Operations manager Mark Shoemake released a statement in February that said the Sonic Drive-In locations in Victoria and Hallettsville planned to establish security changes to help avoid another robbery.
"Some were made," he said Thursday afternoon. "We did have procedures in place, and they were working - but they all didn't work - and that's all we can do. This time, the store itself was better prepared."
One change was locking the doors earlier and only allowing orders to be processed at the drive-thru after 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Shoemake didn't comment on how the robber was able to get into the building but said, "You can't stop a robber. ... If they want your money, they get your money."
