Future development and transportation were on the minds of Victoria residents Thursday.

"Transportation and development go hand in hand," Jared Mayfield said Thursday at the Transportation and Development Conference. "Having a good system of transportation fuels the development."

The conference was hosted by the Victoria Chamber of Commerce to get the community involved and educated in Victoria's growth.

"It all goes back to transportation," Randy Vivian, president/CEO of the chamber, said. "People are really interested in this topic because it affects all of us."

Businesses and residents use roads to get around, he said, so it's important they know what's going on with projects and development.

Paul Friech, Texas Department of Transportation Yoakum District Manager, said the traffic in DeWitt, Gonzales and Victoria counties has increased tremendously.

"It's unheard of," he said. "It's up from 200 to 3,200 vehicles a day. That's not typical."

To make sure roads can handle growing traffic from the Eagle Ford Shale, he said funding from the state and programs including the Pass-Through Financing Program will play a big role in maintenance and new construction.

John Barton, Texas Department of Transportation deputy executive director and chief engineer, closed the forum on a note about the area's growth.

"High-quality transportation is critical to a community like Victoria," he said. "It's important to understand that relationship between transportation and economic development."
