Experience serves as warning to others

Editor, the Advocate:

This week, I have endured feelings of disappointment and shock in connection to some fellow residents of Victoria County.

We had a plumber come out, but nothing matched up with the phone information I was given about the job assignment. He showed up with no supplies, had a different explanation of the automatic "drive-out" fee, the mileage and the charges per hour.

Since he reported with no supplies, my husband had to depart and shop for the needed items while the plumber leisurely waited 30 minutes for his return. The work entailed replacing an exterior faucet and a dryer exterior vent. Now, the rates turned out to be $150-$200 per hour. Parts were supplied by us. He actually worked, on location, about one hour. Our bill was $375.

When I called in for an explanation of the outrageous and unfairly assessed fees, I encountered denial of what I had been quoted, denial of being able to speak with the owner, and I was reminded that I was being rude.

Yes, I will file a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau, but I also want other unwary folks to be aware.

Do not hire according to what is quoted and promised to you via the phone by someone other than the plumber.

Honesty and integrity are slipping with some businesses and are being exchanged for brazen greed.
