A vehicle sits in a grassy area off Lake Placedo Road after flipping several times. The driver and passenger, both women from Port Lavaca, were transported to separate hospitals with critical injuries.

PORT LAVACA - Two women were in critical condition Saturday night after their vehicle went out of control and flipped over several times.

Tara Gayle, 29, of Port Lavaca, was northbound in the 2900 block of Lake Placedo Road when she lost control of her vehicle, which hit a concrete embankment, became airborne and then flipped several times before coming to rest in a grassy area, said Trooper Stephen Gray with the Department of Public Safety.

Gayle was taken to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi by helicopter, where she remained in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The passenger, a 23-year-old Port Lavaca woman whose name was not available, was transported by ambulance to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, where a shift supervisor said the woman was expected to be transported to a San Antonio hospital.

The crash, which occurred about 5:45 p.m., caused traffic to back up in both directions when the road was closed for about an hour. A single lane opened about 6:45 p.m. to relieve the traffic.

All lanes opened after DPS finished its investigation.
