UHV sweeps Incarnate Word
SAN ANTONIO - UHV swept Incarnate Word in doubleheader action Saturday, defeating the Lady Cardinals 6-4 and 4-1.
UHV first baseman Shelby Smith was 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI in game one. The Jaguars combined for 11 hits and five earned runs against three different Incarnate Word pitchers.
After both teams scored once in the first inning, UHV took the lead in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs. Incarnate Word answered with just one run in the fifth. The Lady Cardinals then matched UHV's pair of runs in the sixth that made the score 5-4 headed into the seventh inning.
UHV added an insurance run in the seventh, but it wasn't needed as Incarnate Word was held scoreless in its final three outs.
Alex Holland earned the win for the Jaguars, pitching five innings and allowing four runs on six hits and three walks. Griffin Gilbert also saw time inside the circle, pitching two innings and striking out a pair of batters.
In Game 2, Smith was UHV's offense.
Smith followed up her Game 1 performance with four RBI on a double and home run late in the game.
She drove in three runs with her home run in the fifth inning and then another one in the seventh. Incarnate Word scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Savannah Crittenden pitched a complete game for UHV. She allowed just one run on only three hits and one walk. She also struck out one batter.
