Preregistration is underway across the Victoria school district as we prepare for the start of the 2014-15 school year. Every child currently enrolled in a VISD elementary school through the fourth grade will be taking home registration packets.

Our challenge is in reaching the parents of future students who are not yet a part of Victoria ISD. We are asking for the community's help in locating students who may be coming to Victoria public schools for the first time in August.

If you know of a student who will be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, please let the parents know the child may be eligible for pre-kindergarten. Children who will be 5 on or before Sept. 1 may enroll in kindergarten.

There are guidelines for pre-kindergarten eligibility. Students may be eligible based on family income or having limited English proficiency. Other guidelines include being the child of an active-duty military member or being the child of a member of the military who was killed or wounded in action. Children who have ever been in the care of the Department of Protective and Regulatory Services are also eligible.

There is a misconception among some people that pre-kindergarten is a day care program. If you visit one of our pre-kindergarten classrooms, you will very quickly learn that is not the case. The students in VISD pre-kindergarten are starting on their academic careers.

They are building vocabulary and technology skills, learning to write and taking the first steps in becoming great readers. They are also developing social skills that will serve them well throughout the rest of their lives.

Our teachers follow a set curriculum in pre-kindergarten classrooms that tie directly into the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that will take them through graduation.

There are multiple studies that show the students who participate in a strong early childhood education program are more likely to graduate high school in four years and take more advanced and higher level courses than other students of similar demographics who did not have that early childhood advantage. Quality pre-kindergarten programs have been proven to result in students who are less likely to drop out of school.

Our school district remains committed to providing educational excellence for every child in every classroom every day. Making certain that all children have every possibility to find success in life is a guiding principle of civilization. The motto of pre-kindergarten is "small steps toward big futures." In reality, those initial steps are giant steps in helping students as they grow and learn.

The complete information on pre-kindergarten eligibility is available on the VISD website. Information on preregistration across the district is also available at visd.net. You may also call your school office for more information.

Parents who do not think they will be living in the same attendance zone next school year are asked to complete paperwork. The paperwork can be forwarded to the new school when the family's plans for the coming school year are known.

Preregistration continues through April 4.
