Spring is in the air, and wildflowers are beginning to bloom. With that new life comes an urge to get out and do something. Thankfully for residents of the Crossroads, there are plenty of fun events coming up that benefit charitable and community causes.

On Saturday, residents can go to McFaddin Ranch to watch the annual polo match benefiting the Nave Museum. Polo at McFaddin is put on each year by the Victoria Regional Museum Association and features tailgaters serving food, live music, a chance to enjoy the country, live and silent auctions and, of course, a polo match. The gates open at 12:30 p.m., and the match begins at 2 p.m.

If you'd rather spend the weekend planning your next home renovation project, the Victoria Community Center will be the location of the 2014 Home Product Show on Saturday and Sunday. The event will feature a presentation on home decorating by former "Bachelorette" and host of "Love It or List It" Jillian Harris and a look at the year's top paint colors by Steve Seekamp, manager of the Sherwin-Williams on Mockingbird Lane. Residents will have a chance to find unique ways to personalize their homes through simple steps like finding or making decorations that match their interests. The show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

But maybe you'd rather listen to live music. On Friday night, Dr. Yahagi and the Mended Hearts will play a concert at the Leo J. Welder Center in downtown Victoria to raise money to support the 12-bed Hospice of South Texas Inpatient Center, which will break ground this summer at 1005 Mallette Drive. The center is intended to offer quality end-of-life care in Victoria. The concert will feature a silent auction and hors d'oeuvres. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m.

If wine is your drink of choice, the Texas Zoo is having its annual Wild About Wine fundraiser Friday at 7 p.m. The event will feature food and wine pairings and live music in the zoo. There will also be live animal encounters with a professional photographer and raffles for a Yeti cooler, fishing equipment and a Signature Diamond donated by Green Bros. Jewelers as well as a silent auction.

For those who are more physically active, there are a few options coming up, including the fifth annual Chisholm Trail Run this Friday at 7 a.m. and the CASA Superhero 5K Fun Run/Walk at 8 a.m. March 29. The Chisolm Trail Run will begin at Appelt's Hill Gun Club, County Road 208, Hallettsville. The CASA run will be in Riverside Park in Victoria starting at 8 a.m. Superhero costumes can be worn during the event.

This is a fantastic range of options for activities, and they all are aimed at helping others. We encourage residents to get out and take part in something this weekend. You won't just be having fun for yourself; you'll also be supporting an important part of our community.
