Shiner police officers recovered a mobile counterfeit lab after a cashier at the Dollar General store tipped them off to a man who tried to use fake $10 and $20 bills at the store.

Darren Ray Smith, 48, of Kyle, was arrested Friday on suspicion of felony forgery and booked at the Lavaca County Jail in Hallettsville.

After receiving the tip, officers with the Shiner Police Department were able to locate Smith, according to a news release. At the time of the arrest, the counterfeit money was in Smith's wallet.

A suspicious suitcase was located in an alley where a computer printer and paperwork in Smith's name was also located.

"The printer is capable of printing counterfeit bills," said Shiner Police Chief Ronald Leck.

The United States Secret Service in Houston assisted in the investigation.
