Jags fall in first game of tourney
The Jaguars fell into the loser's bracket after the first day at the Association of Independent Institutions softball conference tournament Thursday when they lost the first game 7-6 to the University of British Columbia.
UHV (32-12) took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning when Naomi Trevino scored on a UBC error, and Krissa Powell scored on a sacrifice bunt by Rachel Laird.
But a late error in the seventh inning by the Jaguars opened a door for the Thunderbirds to score three more runs and create a two-run gap.
UHV tried to catch up with a double by Ashley Winegeart, who ended up scoring the sixth run in the last inning.
The Jaguars will play Georgia Gwinnett on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Laird hit 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Winegeart hit 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Freshman Shelby Smith hit 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Powell hit 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman Griffin Gilbert pitched most of the game for the Jaguars and struck out three batters, walked five and allowed five hits.
Senior Alex Holland pitched an inning and allowed four hits and two walks.

Winegeart earns academicall-district honor
UHV shortstop Winegeart was selected to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 4 softball team for the third straight year.
The award is voted on by CoSIDA members and is based on a player's on-field performance and GPA, according to a release.
Winegeart, a health care administration major, was also recognized as a 2013 Daktronics-NAIA scholar athlete.
The Corpus Christi native has been a four-year starter for the Jaguars and leads the franchise in starts, games played, hits, runs, walks, assists and multi-hit games.
This season, she has a .434 batting average with 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 44 RBIs and 21 stolen bases, according to a release.
