Lady Flyer wins silver, bronze medals at state

St. Joseph sophomore Kristen Fisher practices the long jump during track practice at Victoria East  on Tuesday. Fisher won a silver medal in the triple jump and a bronze medal in the long jump at the TAPPS Class 4A state meet Friday.

WACO - St. Joseph sophomore Kristen Fisher earned a silver and bronze medal in two events at the TAPPS Class 4A state track and field meet Friday at Baylor University in Waco.

Fisher jumped 36 feet, 51/4 inches in the triple jump, only a quarter of an inch less than gold medalist Jessie Pharis of Fort Worth Christian.

In the long jump event, Fisher leaped 16-73/4 to earn the bronze medal.

"Fisher is only a sophomore and never had the opportunity to triple jump in junior high other than doing summer track," St. Joseph coach Manuel De La Garza said. "We are very proud of her and what she brings to the St. Joseph track program."

Sophomore Kristi Hempel placed sixth in the high jump at 4-8. Doug Wall also placed sixth with a leap of 5-8.

In the pole vault, Alex Ferrell came in sixth place at 12 feet. Abigail Gwosdz also participated in pole vault.

Lauren Williams will compete in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday.
