Art Corner: Youth art show winners honored
By Bill Bauer
Sunday we will have a reception at the Victoria Art League, so you can view the artwork of area youth. We will present the prizes for the winners in each age level.
Come out at 2 p.m. and help us encourage the young artists from around this area.
Prizes of $100 will be awarded to the Best of All winner for elementary, middle school age and high school ages. All their art efforts will be on display in our gallery Sunday and will continue to be on display throughout the month from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
You will have an opportunity to vote for a people's choice award, so if you cannot make it out Sunday, be sure to come by another time, view the art and vote. When the show is finished, the people's choice cash prize will be awarded to the winner.
While you are here, you can stroll around our gallery to see the artwork, but you may also be able to see some of our new lighting along with our remodeled bathrooms. We have so many people and organizations to thank for contributing so much during the years to make this and other projects possible up to this point.
For the first time in a long time, we have no new classes starting this month. Jim Feig is finishing his digital photography classes and will be continuing with new classes, so call him about dates and times at 361-649-8738 or 361-576-0578. Proposed classes in the near future are pencil drawing (Prismacolor), watercolor classes with Bill Bauer and stain glass classes once again. Call the art league at 361-572-0825 if you are interested in any of these classes.
Paint The Town will continue to offer classes during the week; call Eunice Collins at 361-576-4043 for a good time slapping paint with your friends.
Our big emphasis this summer will be on children's classes. We have two qualified instructors offering classes this summer for your children. Claire Santellana, who taught at the Art League and Hobby Lobby in the past, will offer a one-week Art Camp from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 23-27. The cost is $80 plus $20 for supplies. This camp is available for elementary children only.
She will also teach each Monday in July from 6 to 7 p.m. for elementary- and intermediate-aged children. The cost for the four classes will be $50. Call Santallena at 361-218-9566 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org to register or ask for more information.
Sarah Weatherly, our other instructor, is offering Paint the Town Kids Class from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays starting June 18 through Aug. 13. Each session will cost $35 per child, and the child will paint and finish a canvas to take home.
Weatherly is also considering an Art Camp in July with the dates to be determined, based on interest. Weatherly taught art at Cade Intermediate and West High School before leaving to have more time with her young children and has been a very active part of the Paint the Town program in Victoria. You may call Weatherly at 254-723-8080 or email at email@example.com for more information or to register. Of course, interested people can also call the Victoria Art League at 572-0825 to register your child.
Susan and I just got back from a motorcycle trip to Big Bend National Park and Fort Davis where we saw the stars at the McDonald Observatory. Viewing our vast universe and the tremendous rock formations at Big Bend only brings home how small a part of our world we are. During the nice weather this month, get out and look around you - enjoy your family, friends and nature. Take some pictures, paint some pictures, or just really enjoy being a part of this community. Come join us at the Victoria Art League.
