A few ideas

• Something with bling: Sparkling gemstones are a big trend in fashion. Find a purse, glasses, belts or flip-flops that fit Mom's style.

• Jewelry for any occasion: No matter her style, there is jewelry for every mom. From casual to fancy, find a necklace or a broach that will accent any outfit.

• Let her uncork: Wine, glasses, koozies and bottle toppers are a smart move for the wine aficionados.

• Pamper her with perfume: Let her relax at home with bath bubbles and body sprays.

• Spend the day with her: If nothing else, buy a gift certificate and drive her to her favorite store or restaurant. Time together is priceless and memorable.

• Support her interests: If she drinks tea, find her a tea set or a special coffee mug to remind her of you.

• Add to her decorations: Find something Mom can hang on a wall or her office. Crosses are always in fashion, and chalk message boards are a recent trend.

Support her green thumb: Buy her something for the garden. New tools or colorful gloves are in.

Shopping for the special Mother's Day gift may be daunting, but with a little thought and planning, it can make Mom feel special.

Mother's Day is May 11.

Karen Gohmert, store manager at Primrose Cottage Boutique in Yorktown, said her mom is one of those hard-to-shop-for types. But because she tries to make each gift specific for her mom, she's still looking around for something perfect.

"It should be a gift that she wouldn't normally buy."

Gift cards are always a good idea, she said; that way Mom can buy what she really wants with it.

"It depends on the mom," said Gohmert. "Go by your instincts on what you think your mom is going to like."

Primrose Cottage Boutique is two stores in one - a casual clothing and gift boutique and Maison Chic Bridal and Special Occasion, which specializes in wedding gowns and formal attire.

The boutique offers a variety of options for the shopper who needs help finding something that can tell mom "thank you."

Clothes for every season and every occasion are available including dresses, leggings, tops and pants, said Gohmert.

Shoppers can also select from a wide range of accessories including belts, handbags, clutches and some household items.

The store has a selection of candles, lotions and scents, too, she said. "Something to pamper Mom."

This Mother's Day, Americans are expected to spend an average of $162.94 on Mom. Total spending is expected to reach $19.9 billion, according to the National Retail Federation's 2014 Mother's Day Spending Survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics.

Popular items from last year included electronic gifts, tablets, smartphones and cameras, according to the National Retail Federation.

Shoppers are expected to spend $812 million on housewares items and gardening tools and $1.7 billion on apparel and accessories to cater to Mom's practical side, according to the study.

If money is an issue, Katie Niemeier, sales association at Primrose Cottage Boutique, offered her handmade go-to gift idea - a handwritten recipe book.

"My mom cooks every night," she said. "She loves to cook."

Share recipes with Mom with a collection of recipes bound in a binder or a scrapbook, Niemeier, 21, said. Her mom taught her how to make a chocolate cream pie, so she makes it for her mom often and said it's a great addition to the recipe book.
