Injured driver charged with DWI after 2-vehicle wreck on US 87
A man injured in a two-vehicle wreck Sunday was charged with driving while intoxicated.
The second driver was taken into custody on outstanding warrants unrelated to the crash.
A 2009 Chevrolet Malibu was northbound on U.S. Highway 87 near Apple Street about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, said Trooper Gerald Bryant, a Department of Public Safety spokesman.
The driver of the Malibu, Joaquin Cabrera, 23, of Victoria, pulled into a crossover to turn around and go back south on the highway. Cabrera saw a southbound 1997 Ford Ranger pickup approaching in the outside lane on the highway and pulled into the inside lane, going south, Bryant said.
The pickup, driven by Alexandro Valle, 49, of Victoria, approached the Malibu, drifted into the inside lane and struck the car on its rear right side.
Valle was transported to DeTar Hospital Navarro, where he was treated and released early Monday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Valle was charged with driving while intoxicated, Bryant said.
Cabrera was taken into custody for outstanding warrants of two traffic violations unrelated to the Sunday crash.
DPS trooper Stephen Gray investigated the wreck. He was assisted by troopers Ronald Johnson and Ruben SanMiguel.
