The St. Joseph softball team will play in the TAPPS 4A state championship Saturday in Waco. They defeated SA Holy Cross 10-5 in the regional semifinal.

COLLEGE STATION - The St. Joseph softball team is headed to the TAPPS Class 4A state semifinal game after defeating San Antonio Holy Cross 10-5 in the regional Monday at Texas A&M.

"We know each other very well," coach Rudy Diaz said about Holy Cross (25-11-1), which is also in TAPPS 3-4A. "The girls started strong in the first few innings, which was enough to finish the game."

A number of former St. Joseph softball players, who are now students at Texas A&M, cheered on the Lady Flyers at the game, Diaz said.

"They played a good game, and I'm hoping they continue in our mission for next Friday and Saturday," Diaz said.

The state semifinal game will be at 4 p.m. Friday against Fort Bend Christian in Waco. The Sugar Land team is the same one St. Joseph faced at state last season.

"We lost on a two-run homer; they remember that game very clearly," Diaz said. "I know the girls are excited to get back and have a shot at them again."

The winner will play in the state championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Waco ISD.
