LYNN, Mass. - UHV came up short in its quest for a Association of Independent Institutions Baseball Championship title.
But the Jaguars did earn a bid into the next round of the NAIA tournament.
UHV claimed a 4-1 win over LSU-Alexandria in the semifinal before losing 11-0 to No. 6 Georgia Gwinnett in the championship game Monday at Fraser Field.
The Jaguars (23-31) went 3-2 in the tournament, and their only losses were to top seed Georgia Gwinnett.
"In the three wins we put together, I've never seen the players get behind each other like that," said UHV coach Terry Puhl. "We got everything we could out of the pitching staff."
UHV trailed LSU-Alexandria 1-0 heading into the seventh inning of the semifinal game.
The Jaguars scored twice in the seventh on two-out singles by Ryan Suescun and Brandon Bohanon.
They added two runs in the eighth inning on a two-out double by Robert Gleinser.
Starting pitcher Orlando Quiroga yielded four hits and no earned runs before being relieved by Andre Del Bosque with two outs in the eighth inning.
Del Bosque walked two but got the remaining four outs on strikeouts and earned his 12th save.
UHV had six hits, and only Robert Zaragoza, who singled in the ninth, reached base after the third inning.
The Grizzlies broke the game open by scoring five runs in the eighth inning and two in the ninth.
Del Bosque, pitcher Cory Carter and outfielder Stephen Shorkey were named to the all-tournament team.
The Jaguars should learn Wednesday evening where they will play the next round.
