GLEN ROSE - Last year, Chloe Velasco's state championship was a surprise. That wasn't the case this season.

Velasco, a senior at St. Joseph, won her second-straight TAPPS Class 4A individual state championship after finishing atop the leaderboard Tuesday at the state championship tournament. Velasco began the tournament with a 68 and followed that with a 72 on Day 2 for a 140 total score.

She finished four strokes ahead of second-place finisher Christian Cumutte of Midland Christian School.

The Lady Flyers team, however, fell short of its state championship goals. St. Joseph began the tournament strong with a 323 - one shot behind the leader - but faltered on Day 2 with a 332 team score. The Lady Flyers finished with a 655, while Houston Lutheran South Academy took first place with a 639 (322, 317). Dallas Parish Episcopal School was third with a 674 (332, 342).

St. Joseph placed three golfers, including Velasco, in the top 10 of the individual standings.

Lacie Linam finished eighth overall with a 161 (79, 82) and Hannah Karasiuk was ninth with a 168 (81, 87).

Taylor Janak finished 23rd overall with a 186 (95, 91) and Kelley Wood was 29th with a 196 (95, 101)
