Twice as nice: Lady Flyer wins 2nd state title

St. Joseph's Chloe Velasco smiles after winning  her second straight TAPPS Class 4A state golf title Tuesday.

• Second place: St. Joseph - 655 (323, 332)

• Third place: Dallas Parish Episcopal - 674 (332, 342)

• Fourth place: Tyler All Saints Episcopal - 716 (362, 354)

• Fifth place: Austin Hyde Park - 729 (360, 369)

• Sixth place: Fort Worth Christian - 782 (379, 403)

• Seventh place: St. Dominic Savio - 806 (421, 385)

• Chloe Velasco: 140 (68, 72)

• Lacie Linam: 161 (79, 82)

• Hannah Karasiuk: 168 (81, 87)

• Taylor Janak: 186 (95, 91)

• Kelley Wood: 196 (95, 101)

GLEN ROSE - Last year, Chloe Velasco's state championship was a surprise. That wasn't the case this season.

Velasco, a senior at St. Joseph, won her second-straight TAPPS Class 4A individual state championship after finishing atop the leaderboard Tuesday at the state championship tournament. Velasco began the tournament with a 68 and followed that with a 72 on Day 2 for a 140 total score.

She finished four strokes ahead of second-place finisher Christian Cumutte of Midland Christian School.

The Lady Flyers team, however, fell short of its state championship goals. St. Joseph began the tournament strong with a 323 - one shot behind the leader - but faltered on Day 2 with a 332 team score. The Lady Flyers finished with a 655, while Houston Lutheran South Academy took first place with a 639 (322, 317). Dallas Parish Episcopal School was third with a 674 (332, 342).

St. Joseph placed three golfers, including Velasco, in the top 10 of the individual standings.

Lacie Linam finished eighth overall with a 161 (79, 82) and Hannah Karasiuk was ninth with a 168 (81, 87).

Taylor Janak finished 23rd overall with a 186 (95, 91) and Kelley Wood was 29th with a 196 (95, 101)
