The Crossroads has earned a reputation for valuing and honoring members of our military. On May 17, we hope to see that reputation continue.

Warrior's Weekend VIII will begin May 16 with the arrival of the soldiers who flew in from Houston at Faith Family Church. Members of the community are encouraged to come out and cheer for the warriors in communities along the route from Houston to Victoria and to greet them in Victoria at the Warrior's Weekend Field of Honor outside Faith Family Church, Ron Kocian, president of Warrior's Weekend, said.

In previous years, the ceremony was held inside the church, but this year, the ceremony will take place out on the Field of Honor. After the ceremony, the soldiers and their families will head out at 4:30 p.m. to their lodgings for the weekend.

Early Saturday morning, more warriors will be driving in from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio on buses and will pass through communities along U.S. Highway 87, including Nixon, Smiley, Cuero and Victoria, on their way to Port O'Connor to meet up with the other warriors and their families. At 9 a.m., the warriors will start to load up on the boats for a day of fishing.

The preparations for Warrior's Weekend are going well, Kocian said, but he would like to have some more boats to take the warriors out fishing.

"At last count, we have about 285 boats, but we'd like another 100 or so," he said. Having expert knowledge of fishing or the bays is not important, Kocian said. Boat captains mainly just need to be willing to take the soldiers out and show them the love and appreciation the event is all about.

If no more boats join, all of the warriors will still be able to go out and fish, but members of the families will have to stay on shore. But there will be plenty of activities for the families as well while the warriors are away, Kocian said, including a live fishing tank, shopping trips for the wives and trips to the beach.

We are excited to see Warrior's Weekend return for another year of serving and honoring members of our military. These men and women have put their lives on the line and were willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Many of them came back scarred mentally and physically. We have the opportunity and privilege to thank them in person for their sacrifices.

We encourage members of the community to come out and support these brave men and women throughout the weekend. A full itinerary of the weekend's events is available at warriorsweekend.org. Whether you sign up to take some warriors fishing or simply cheer and wave as they drive into town, please come out and thank these men and women for everything they have done.
