Citizens Medical Center canceled early morning surgeries Wednesday because a water pipe broke, said Stephen Thames, hospital CEO.
An 8-inch pipe that was part of the chilled water cooling system burst on the third floor of the North Tower at 4 a.m. The water seeped into the basement, and the hospital had to shut off the air conditioner to fix the problem.
About 12 surgeries scheduled for before 8 a.m. were canceled and rescheduled because the procedures could not be performed without air conditioning, Thames said.
By 8 a.m., the pipe was replaced, the water was cleaned up, the carpets were dried out, and the ceiling tiles were fixed, he said.
The surgery schedule resumed about 8:30 a.m.
