Jaguars fall in NAIA opening round
The Jaguars fell 5-4 to Indiana University-Southeast on Monday at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in Montgomery, Ala.
One of seven teams to earn an opening round berth, UHV (33-14) had seven hits and committed one error against the the Grenadiers (42-10).
The Jaguars took an early lead with three runs scored in the first inning.
A fourth run in the third inning kept UHV ahead of IU-Southeast.
However, a run in the fifth inning by the Grenadiers tied the game, causing it to go into extra innings.
The Grenadiers scored in the eighth inning to win the game.
Freshman Savannah Crittenden pitched the game, striking out three batters, walking five, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.
Senior Rachel Laird went 4 for 4 at that plate and scored a run for UHV.
Ashley Winegeart went 2 for 4 at the plate, and freshman Shelby Smith went 1 for 4. Both players scored a run each.
Crittenden, Krissa Powell and Kristina Droz had RBIs.
Jessica Leanhart pitched for IU-Southeast and struck out three Jaguars, walked five and allowed seven hits.
UHV will play the loser between No. 1 seed Auburn University at Montgomery (38-6) and No. 4 seed Bryan College in Tennessee (29-22) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Montgomery is one of 10 locations hosting an NAIA opening round tournament.
The winner from each tournament advances to the 34th annual NAIA Softball World Series in Columbus, Ga., from May 23 to May 29.
