The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.

FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING MAY 9

Hunan Restaurant Inc., 601 E. Mockingbird Lane, Victoria. Demerits: 43. Wash hands between tasks and upon entering kitchen. Store personal items away from dish area. Cover food in walk-in and in coolers. Keep raw meat off of the floor in the walk-in cooler. Wash hands and use gloves when handling watermelon. Cover pans of food before stacking pans. Date-label cooked, ready-to-eat foods. Keep hose out of sink at least 2 inches. Keep soap and paper towels at hand-washing sink in dish-washing area. Do not use insect spray. Employees did not demonstrate knowledge of food safety. There was a lack of hand-washing and date-labeling. Clean out area around dumpster, including the grease and liquids. Clean and sanitize food contact surface, cutting boards and dish racks for dishwashing machine. Replace lighting in kitchen. Need to get a cover for the trash can in women's restroom. Five facility or equipment violations.

Sonic Drive-In, 920 W. Main St., Edna. Demerits: 19. Wash rags after touching rags. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Do not use hand sanitizer and then touch a used rag. Address situation of condensation in freezer falling on food. Thermometer needed for front tabletop. One facility or equipment violation.

El Vaquero Steakhouse, 614 Irvine St., Yoakum. Demerits: 18. In the bar area, refrigerate cranberry juice and other juices after opening. Use utensils or gloves when plating foods. Need to have hot water on bar side of restaurant including restrooms and bar sinks. Keep soap and paper towels at hand sink in dishwashing room. One facility or equipment violation.

China Inn, 3602 E. Houston Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 17. Keep foods covered in coolers. Work in the date-labeling cooked, ready-to-eat foods with a seven-day use-by date. Hand-washing sink in bar area needs soap and paper towels. Do not store food in plastic grocery bags. Use only food-grade storage bags. Post the buffet plate sign. Three facility or equipment violations.

Diamond Mini Mart, 3602-A Houston Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 14. Ice bags need proper labels. Need use-by dates for Deli Express sandwiches. Keep soap in restrooms. Store pickle tongs and ice scoop on a clean, sanitized surface. Clean the ice machine. Two facility or equipment violations. Two facility or equipment violations.

Lupita's Restaurant, 906 S. Laurent St., Victoria. Demerits: 14. Cover food in coolers. Date-label food with a seven-day use-by date. Need to clean up the droppings. Need a thermometer in the refrigerator. Two facility or equipment violations.

Captain G's, 712 W. Adams St., Port O'Connor. Demerits: 12. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Wear gloves when handling ready-to-eat foods. Need to date-label.

Sammy's In-N-Out, 2602 E. Mockingbird Lane, Victoria. Demerits: 11. All bags of ice need labels. Dispose of the expired Lunchables, medication, sausage and lunch meat. Clean and sanitize the pickle tong container. One facility or equipment violation.

Super Donuts, 1917 John Stockbauer Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 11. Keep children out of kitchen. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Keep personal belongings away from food products or food preparation areas. Keep written documentation of time and temperature of sausage rolls. Hand-washing sink can only be used for hand-washing. One facility or equipment violation.

Wienerschnitzel No. 595, 3602 John Stockbauer Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 7. Improper cold-hold temperature. Use gloves or establish bare hand contact policy when handling ready-to-eat foods. Clean the ice machine. Need to weather-strip the back wall exit. One facility or equipment violation.

Wienerschnitzel No. 119, 1218 E. Rio Grande St., Victoria. Demerits: 6. Label the sanitizer buckets. Fix the leak under the hand sink. Two facility or equipment violations.

Black Gold Inn, 207 U.S. Highway 77-A North, Yoakum. Demerits: 6. Label the glass cleaner and store it below food preparation surface. Need to post the 2014 food establishment permit. Two facility or equipment violations.

Rocky's Noodle House, 424 S. Main St., Seadrift. Demerits: 4. Store raw meat below other foods.

REINSPECTIONS

B and B Express No. 5002, 101 W. York St., Ganado, inspected April 21 with 16 demerits. Reinspected April 30 with all violations corrected.

El Vaquero Steakhouse, 614 Irvine St., Yoakum, inspected May 1 with 18 demerits. Reinspected May 1 with finding the breaker had been tripped. Reset the breaker and hot water supply to bar side of restaurant is working.
