Coverage of Goliad inspired change

Editor, the Advocate:

I want to commend and thank the Victoria Advocate for its superb journalism in covering what many of us felt was a "Crisis in Goliad."

Citizens stepped up to the plate Saturday by electing new Goliad city government representation. I don't think this would have happened without media personnel who are committed to the dissemination of information, utilizing the highest standards of journalism. Under no circumstance did the Advocate print information regarding Goliad's crisis that wasn't checked and rechecked for accuracy. Public officials are supposed to work for the people. Texas law gives us tools to maintain checks and balances on government. Not only is the law there to assist, it is there to mandate that we do our part as responsible citizens to stand watch. This has been championed many times by the Advocate's editorial staff. Discovering the truth sometimes hurts.

To you, Victoria Advocate - thanks!

Linda Powell, Goliad
