Last year, during Warrior's Weekend, my wife and I took advantage of a good meal and the chance to mingle with and thank some of the wounded and their families in Port O'Connor after their fishing adventure that Saturday.
One mother, from New York City, and her wounded son shared our table at supper. She had caught the first fish of her life that morning, a hardhead, and she was excited. Unlike the first wave of warrior families who had arrived in Houston by air Friday and were treated to the heroes' procession through the towns off U.S. Highway 59 to Victoria, this "local" group's bus convoy had come directly to Port O'Connor early Saturday morning from the San Antonio military hospitals. They had passed through towns along the way, where people were cheering and waving flags on the roadside at daybreak when the buses came through. It meant a lot to her that her son was being honored that way. Telling us about it brought tears to her eyes.
