Alice woman arrested on human smuggling charge
An Alice woman was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of human smuggling and possession of a controlled substance.
The woman was pulled over about 2:15 p.m. on U.S. Highway 59 by a Department of Public Safety trooper on suspicion of following too closely to the car in front of her.
A search of her vehicle revealed seven men hidden in the floorboard of a navy blue Ford Explorer. The men are suspected to be in the United States illegally, said Trooper Jeremiah Collins.
About seven grams of methamphetamine also were recovered from a black bag next to the driver's seat. The woman's name has not been released.
The men were temporarily detained by the Victoria County Sheriff's Office while waiting to be transported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The woman was booked in the Victoria County Jail.
