Victoria Fire Department emergency workers carry a man involved in a single-vehicle wreck to an ambulance. The car rolled several times off John Stockbauer Drive. Occupants had to be cut from the car. The wreck occurred about 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Two people were taken to a Victoria hospital after their car flipped numerous times Friday afternoon on John Stockbauer Drive.

Witnesses said they saw the vehicle, a black Scion, traveling north on John Stockbauer Drive near Berry Plastics, lose control and roll several times before resting near the railroad tracks, said Victoria Police Officer Aaron Gonzales. The crash occurred about 3:45 p.m.

The driver, Orlando Mendez, 22, and passenger, Gilbert Gaitan, 27, both of Victoria, were responsive to paramedics and Victoria firefighters and had to be extricated from the vehicle, Gonzales said. They were taken by ambulance to Citizens Medical Center, where they were admitted into intensive care, a hospital spokeswoman said.

"The driver said he thought he drove over a patch of gravel and lost control of the vehicle," Gonzales said.

The rollover crash is under investigation.
