UHV golfer to compete at national tournament

Heather Shake, UHV freshman, will play in the NAIA Women's Golf Championships in Lincoln, Neb.

Pearland native Heather Shake will become the first UHV women's golfer to compete in the NAIA Women's Golf National championships, which start Tuesday in Lincoln, Neb.

Shake, who placed fourth in her first collegiate tournament in February, will tee off at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course.

The freshman earned a bid to the national tournament after winning individual honors at the Association of Independent Institutions Championships.

Shake has scored in the top five in five different events this season. She has scored the lowest in three events, according to a news release.

At the Loyola-New Orleans Invitational in Slidell, La., Shake took first place with a 3-over 147. She also won the AII Championships in Bremerton, Wash., with a 5-over 149 and the women's division of the PGA Minority Collegiate Championships in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with a 6-over 224.

With a 74.42 scoring average, Shake will enter the NAIA tournament ranked No. 7 in the Golfstate Head-to-Head NAIA rankings. Shake has scored in the 70s in 11 rounds this season, with the lowest round being in the first round of the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate at 1-under 71.
