4 killed in Memorial Day crash in Refugio County

Four people were killed in a three-vehicle wreck 1.15 miles north of Refugio on Monday night.

Some of those dead were not wearing their seat belts. One person who was not wearing a seat belt was ejected and then run over, a spokesman with the Department of Public Safety in Corpus Christi said Tuesday morning.

A 2000 Chevrolet sport utility vehicle driven by Kenneth Robinson, 49, of Harlingen, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 77 in the right lane.

A 2013 Ford Mustang driven by Dariel Carlos, 26, of Pharr, was traveling north on the highway in the left lane.

A 2013 Nissan Altima driven by Hector Solis Garza, 48, of Houston, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 77 in the left lane behind the Ford.

Robinson said another car cut in front of him and began to brake, causing him to lose control of his vehicle.

He traveled into the northbound lanes of U.S. 77, striking the Mustang's front left side.

The Nissan's driver took evasive action but was unable to avoid striking the back right of Robinson's Chevrolet, the DPS spokesman said.

The crash happened about 6:25 p.m.

The Chevrolet's passengers included Diana Robinson, 46, of Harlingen; Daniel Villalon, 69; and Maria Villalon, 68, both of La Feria.

The Ford's passengers included Gerardo Carlos, 38, and Dioncio Trevino, 45, both of Pharr.

The Nissan's passengers included Veronica Solis, 43; Segura Valdez, 21; Hector Solis Jr., 23; Hector Solis III, 3; all of South Houston.

The Villalons, Dariel Carlos and Dioncio Trevino were pronounced dead at the scene by Refugio County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Lorraine Lopez, the DPS spokesman said.

Kenneth Robinson refused treatment.

Diana Robinson, Gerardo Carlos and all the occupants of the Nissan were taken to the Refugio County Memorial Hospital.

Gerardo Carlos and the occupants of the Nissan were all treated and released.

Trooper Randy Kaiser investigated the crash.

The DPS spokesman could not say if rain was a contributing factor in the crash because it was not listed in the report.
